This week's microfiction is a 100-word story about a little boy who lies.

Many (but not all) of my micro stories are inspired by prompts provided by THE FICTION DEALER Substack. I highly recommend checking it out if you’re interested in reading more microfics — or writing your own!

The Bogsbane Will Get You

Benny was a sweet boy. He never harmed anyone. But he was a liar, and everybody knew.

His parents and teacher warned him that the next time he lied, the Bogsbane would come and collect its due. Benny promised to behave but secretly didn’t believe their stories. Why can adults lie, but not kids?

Next week, Benny said his imaginary friend was the one who broke the vase.

“That’ll be the last lie you tell us,” his father said mournfully.

That night, the Bogsbane came and called on Benny. He never lied again.

You can’t tell tales without a tongue.
